Cardiovascular endurance is the ability of the heart, lungs and blood vessels to deliver oxygen to working muscled and tissues, as well as the ability of the muscles and tissues to utilize that oxygen. AS cardiovascular endurance is improved you will experience several benefits including increased heart size, this size increase improves the strength of you heart muscles and increases its ability to preform work at a lower heart rate. Decrease in heart rate, this reduces the stress on the heart making it more efficient. Increased cardiac output, this improves the ability of the heart to pump blood throughout the body helping muscles and organs get oxygen rich blood flow. This is the most significant adaptation in the cardiovascular system. Increasing cardiovascular endurance can also help lower blood pressure and increase blood plasma volume.
Improving your cardiovascular endurance doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be done by walking, running, hiking, swimming and biking. The key is to challenge the aerobic system to ensure you continue to see increases in cardiovascular endurance. Challenging your aerobic system can be done by increasing the time spent doing a particular activity, as you begin to max out the amount of time you want to spend on activity you can then increase the intensity of your effort to continue to challenge and improve your cardiovascular endurance.
