Direct Access Colonoscopy Program

The Direct Access Colonoscopy Program allows qualified patients to fast track the colonoscopy procedure and eliminates a pre-consultation appointment.

Your primary care physician can refer you to the program and directly schedule an appointment.

What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is an outpatient procedure that can prevent colon cancer or find it early when it’s easier to treat and cure. Colonoscopies are done at Pomerene Hospital in by a health care provider who has specialized training to find and remove polyps from the colon and check for signs of cancer. Polyps are growths in the colon that may turn into cancer. A colonoscope is used during the procedure. It is a thin, flexible tube that has a light, camera, and tool to remove polyps or to collect cells for testing.

Preparation for your Colonoscopy

Before a colonoscopy, the colon must be thoroughly cleansed. This cleaning out process is called bowel prep. If your colon is not completely clean, your healthcare provider may not be able to clearly see your entire colon. For the bowel prep, you will drink a laxative that causes frequent stools and diarrhea.

Day of the Colonoscopy

On the day of your colonoscopy, you will be given medicine through an IV that will help you relax and sleepy during the procedure. The procedure typically takes about 20 minutes to an hour. Please plan to be at the hospital for 2-3 hours from check-in to the completion of your procedure.

After the Colonoscopy

You will be in recovery for observation until you
are discharged by your provider. It is important
that you refrain from driving and working after your colonoscopy. Please bring someone with you to transport you home after you are discharged. You may feel tired after your procedure and that is normal. We recommend that you rest for the remainder of the day. You may also feel bloated or pass gas for a few hours afterwards as you clear the air from the colon.

Contact your provider
if you experience

While problems after a colonoscopy are rare, it is important to know early signs of possible problems. Please call your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Heavy rectal bleeding
  • Severe belly pain
  • A fever
  • Dizziness

  • A swollen and firm belly
