Most babies are ready and eager to nurse within the first hour after birth. Pomerene Hospital encourages Kangaroo Care (skin-to-skin), to assist with breastfeeding and bonding, as much as possible during your hospital stay and the following weeks at home.
Our Lactation team will assist with breastfeeding and offer education to help you and your baby. Learning how to breastfeed and your baby learning to breastfeed can take time and patience. Moms and babies come in all shapes and sizes, and we are here to help you discover what works best to help you achieve breastfeeding success!
Are you having pain while breastfeeding, or suffering with nipple damage? Are you afraid your baby isn’t getting enough milk? Expert help is available. Pomerene Hospital is a Five-Star Ohio Department of Health “First Steps for Healthy Babies” institution, and we are here for you! Lactation consultations are now available by appointment, and most insurances cover the first two to three visits. Our International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) will meet with you and your baby in one of our private mother/baby suites, complete with adjustable bed, recliner/rocker, bathroom, and hospital-grade double electric pump if needed. The consult consists of an interview for pinpointing any areas of concern, a thorough physical assessment for baby, a breast assessment for mom, pre- and post-weight measurement for baby, feeding session, and a review of needed interventions with a discharge plan of care. The IBCLC will then stay in touch with you for as long as needed to ensure that feedings are going smoothly and both mom and baby are staying healthy. Call the hospital line at (330) 674-1584, ext 1290, where one of our friendly nurses will assist you with scheduling your private consultation.
In an effort to improve the health and welfare of mothers and infants, Pomerene Hospital is initiating Best Start, a new program to give expectant families the best start possible. Attendees will receive encouragement and education on the benefits of breastfeeding and how to achieve success. Mothers-to-be and mothers who have already delivered can come to receive free expert assistance from a certified lactation consultant. These meetings are held during our Childbirth Education Classes on the last Saturday of every month.
