Pomerene Hospital proudly recognized one of its dedicated nurses who provide best-in-class patient care as well as represent the highest level of professionalism and compassion as a nurse and caring to the Holmes County community and those beyond every encounter, every day. The extraordinary care provided by Zach Lowe, RN, resulted in a prestigious accomplishment – being recognized as a DAISY Award recipient.
The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known, but not uncommon auto-immune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System). The care Patrick and his family received from Nurses while he was ill inspired the creation of The DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses, an evidenced-based means of providing Nurse recognition and thanking Nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
Our recipient, Zach Lowe, RN, began his career at Pomerene in July of 2018 and has worked on Pomerene’s Medical Surgical unit since. His nomination for the award was sent in by a patient of Pomerene that Zach had cared for. The patient wrote, "Zach's compassion for his job showed his nursing skills." They went on to explain that, "His knowledge was also noted as I witnessed his skill while teaching a student. After reading about your organization and how the DAISY Award was born, he embodies your vision for extraordinary nurses!"
Jason Justus, CEO, would like to add, “The origination of the Daisy Award is based upon the positive impact nursing can have on patients and patient family members. Often, the positive impact from nursing is not exclusive to the provision of clinical care. Instead, the positive impact involves compassion and human behavior exhibited by nurses. I believe Zach Lowe, RN, Daisy Award winner, excels in his professional provision of clinical care, but is best known for his individual attention, compassion, and caring bedside manner. These excellent traits are a reflection of the entire nursing team at Pomerene.”
Pomerene’s mission is “Caring for our community’s health,” and we are proud that our devoted nurses continue to be the beating heart of our hospital and our community.
In addition to the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, the Foundation expresses gratitude to the nursing profession internationally in over 4,650 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing with recognition of direct care Nurses, Nurse-led Teams, Nurse Leaders, Nursing Faculty, Nursing Students, Lifetime Achievement in Nursing and through the J. Patrick Barnes Grants for Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice Projects and Medical Mission Grants.
