More than 25% of Americans suffer from excessive sleep disorders including loud snoring, insomnia, and sleep apnea (failure to breath during sleep). The Pomerene Sleep Center specializes in diagnosing sleep-related disorders. Sleep problems that remain untreated can often lead to other health conditions such as heart disease and high blood pressure.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea is brief cessations in breathing during sleep, caused by a physical obstruction, with loud snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, and morning headaches.
Insomnia is difficulty falling asleep, walking and inability to return to sleep, and waking to early or un-refreshing sleep.
Narcolepsy is excessive sleepiness with uncontrollable urge to fall asleep, sudden muscle loss, and sleep paralysis.
Restless Leg Syndrome is uncomfortable sensation in the legs that occurs just before falling asleep that creates an irresistible urge to move legs.
Periodic Limb Movement Disorder describes limb movements while sleeping that disrupt sleep patterns.
A Polysomnogram is a sleep study that provides an overnight recording of patterns and behaviors associated with sleep. It is performed in order to determine what stages of sleep an individual achieves and whether any sleep-related abnormalities are present.
